Lancaster Stormers News Release
Early games have not been kind to the Lancaster Barnstormers.
Jake Fox and Corey Smith hit home runs, and Josh Lowey yielded only one hit over six innings as the Somerset Patriots downed the Lancaster Barnstormers, 9-1, handing the Barnstormers their seventh straight defeat in games starting before 4:00 in the afternoon.
Lowey (5-1) lost a lengthy battle with Blake Gailen to start the ballgame. The Lancaster center fielder went to the 11th pitch of his at bat before drilling a leadoff single into left. That would turn out to be the only hit against the Patriots right-hander who went on to walk three and strike out six.
His offense gave him plenty of support. Jake Fox connected for his league-leading 13th homer on a 2-1 pitch from Will Savage (3-4) in the bottom of the first. In the second, Luis Montanez reached on an infield single as Kody Kirkland made a diving stop but could not get off the throw in time. Eddy Martinez-Esteve banged a single up the middle just out of the reach of Olmo Rosario. Savage got Josh Kroeger to bound into a 1-6 force play with the runner holding at third, but Bobby Stevens delivered Montanez from third with a sacrifice fly.
Smith followed with a two-run homer to left center in the third, but it was the fifth inning that gave Somerset a clamp on the game. Leadoff man Jonny Tucker lined a single to right to get the inning started, and Aharon Eggleston followed with a grounder through the open hole on the right side. Fox yanked a double into the left field corner to score one. Smith struck out, but Luis Montanez cleared left fielder Stephen Holdren with another double to plate Eggleston for a 6-0 lead. Fox scored on a single by Martinez-Esteve, the final batter faced by Savage. Derrick Loop got a force play out of Kroeger as Montanez scored.
The Barnstormers ended a 15 1/3 inning scoreless drought in the seventh when Gustavo Molina drove a double beyond Montanez in right center to bring home Kevin Howard from first.
Lancaster opens a four-game series against Bridgeport on Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Left-hander Horacio Ramirez (1-0) will take the hill for the Barnstormers against right-hander Josh Butler at 7:00. Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Lancaster has not won a series on the road...The three hits was a season low...Yoslan Herrera faced two batters, retiring both...It was his eighth consecutive scoreless appearance.
