Early Runs Send Keys to Fourth Straight Win

June 13, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Keys scored six runs over the first four innings and Lucas Long tossed six innings of one-run baseball in a 7-3 victory over Myrtle Beach on Monday night at TicketReturn.com Field. The orange and black are two games over .500 for the first this season.

The Keys scored at least a tally in each of the first four frames against Pelicans starter Erick Leal (8-3). The right-hander, who came in with a league-high eight wins and a six-game winning streak, suffered his first loss since April 30.

In the initial inning, Cam Kneeland doubled with one out. Wynston Sawyer chopped a ball back to Leal, who attempted to nab Kneeland at third, but was unsuccessful. Aderlin Rodriguez slapped a ball to left to score Kneeland to hand the Keys a 1-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach tied things up against Long in the bottom half. Gioskar Amaya reached the second row of bleachers over the left field wall for his third home run in his last two games. It would be the only run Long would allow. In six innings, Long (4-4) allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out six. He retired 11 in a row from the second to fifth innings.

T.J. Olesczuk kick started things in the second. The Keys outfielder singled and advanced to second on a groundout by Zach Kapstein, who made his debut. Two batters later, Erick Salcedo roped a double down the right field line to make it 2-0. Leal surrendered a home run to Conor Bierfeldt in the third to stake the Keys to a 3-0 edge.

The orange and black opened the game up in the fourth on just one hit. Kapstein singled with one out and got to second on a fielder's choice by Anthony Caronia. Leal issued walks to Salcedo and Kneeland to load the bases and pegged Sawyer with a pitch to make it 4-0. Sawyer would be the last batter for Leal, who tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits. James Pugliese entered with the bases loaded and got a groundball to shortstop, but Gleyber Torres whipped it past first base to score a pair and make it 6-1. Pugliese would follow with four innings of hitless relief.

Meanwhile, the Pelicans chipped away. Max Schuh replaced Long and got just two outs in the seventh. He hit Jason Vosler, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Spingola. A batter after Spingola, Charcer Burks launched a home run to left-center field to cut the deficit in half. Jeff Beliveau retired the last batter of the inning and stranded one.

Beliveau walked two batters in the eighth in between a pair of strikeouts to bring the tying run to the plate. Michael Zouzalik was called from the bullpen and punched out Jeffrey Baez to keep it a 6-3 Keys lead.

Kneeland knocked his second hit of the game against Tommy Thorpe in the ninth inning to score Caronia, who reached on a drag bunt to begin the frame. Zouzalik (8) worked around a two-out single in the ninth to gather the save.

Myrtle Beach was officially eliminated from playoff contention with the loss, as Salem wins the Southern Division first half. The Pelicans and Keys see each other again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Franderlin Romero (3-0, 3.18) takes the mound for the Keys against Myrtle Beach RHP Jeremy Null (2-2, 2.45). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
