Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - After an eight-run performance on Sunday, Winston-Salem struck out a season-high 16 times in a 3-1 loss to Wilmington on Monday night at Frawley Stadium.
The previous season-high in strikeouts for the Dash (25-39) was on May 12, when the team went down on strikes 15 times against Myrtle Beach at TicketReturn.Com Field. Blue Rocks starter Josh Staumont (2-6) punched out 12 Dash batters in five innings, picking up his second win of the season. Reliever Jake Newberry, who earned his first save of the year, struck out four hitters in a one-hit, four-inning performance.
Winston-Salem starter Matt Cooper (4-5) allowed four hits and three earned runs in five innings, but also struck out three batters. The Carolina League All-Star now has a Minor League-leading 95 strikeouts.
It didn't take long for Wilmington (22-39) to take an early edge against the Dash. With runners on first and second and two outs in the first inning, Elier Hernandez blooped an RBI single off Cooper to left to give Wilmington a 1-0 edge.
The Blue Rocks went scoreless in the second, but would add to their lead in the third. After a Humberto Arteaga leadoff single, Alfredo Escalera smacked a two-run homer over the left field wall to put Wilmington up 3-0.
The Dash scored their lone run of the contest in the fifth off Staumont. With bases loaded and two outs, Nick Basto drew an RBI walk to make it a 3-1 game. The 22-year-old, who went 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a walk on Monday, has now reached base at least twice in all four games with Winston-Salem since returning after a 22-game stint with Double-A Birmingham.
Staumont would end the fifth inning threat by striking out Marcus Davis. The Blue Rocks right-hander allowed three hits and one earned run, while issuing three walks and hitting two batters.
Dash reliever Danny Dopico, who came into the game in the sixth, threw two perfect innings and struck out three batters. Euclides Leyer followed with a scoreless eighth.
After winning a season-high four in a row from June 5-9, Winston-Salem has now lost four straight games.
The Dash continue their three-game series against the Blue Rocks on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Winston-Salem sends Thad Lowry (5-4, 4.09 ERA) to the bump against Wilmington left-hander Foster Griffin (1-3, 7.59 ERA). The Pregame Dash begins at 6:20 p.m., and fans can tune in on wsdash.com/broadcast or the TuneIn Radio App.
Winston-Salem returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, June 16, for a four-game set against the Salem Red Sox to conclude the season's first half. Thursday's series opener is another Throwback Thursday, presented by Parr Investments, that will feature commemorative Warthogs jerseys.
