P-Nats Fall 7-1 as Salem Clinches the South

Potomac Nationals News Release

Salem, VA - With an opportunity to spoil a potential division clinching celebration, the Potomac Nationals (30-32 Overall, 17-16 Road) failed to contain the offense of the Salem Red Sox (41-23 Overall, 21-11 Home) Monday night at LewisGale Field. The P-Nats managed just one run on six hits in a 7-1 loss that ended with the Red Sox celebrating a Southern Division title on the mound.

Officially eliminated from the playoffs with Sunday afternoon's loss, the P-Nats fell into an early hole Monday night in their first visit to Salem. DH Yoan Moncada led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by 3B Rafael Devers. That was Salem's only run against RHP Dakota Bacus (ND), who made his second start of the season. Bacus allowed just four hits and struck out a season high six in the no-decision.

Potomac leveled the game at one with three singles in a span of four hitters vs. LHP Matt Kent (W, 6-3) in the third inning. LF Dale Carey and 2B Khayyan Norfork started the inning with singles, and after CF Andrew Stevenson struck out, SS Osvaldo Abreu tied the game with an RBI single to left field. Potomac left men at first and second in the inning.

After Bacus went the first five innings, LHP RC Orlan (L, 2-2) struggled to find the strike zone in the sixth frame. Orlan walked a season high five hitters and recorded just two outs. With runners on first and second and one out, Orlan's first of two wild pitches in the inning took the double play out of order, and 2B Deiner Lopez made it 2-1 with an RBI groundout to Abreu on what could have been an inning-ending double play. Orlan's second wild pitch plated C Jordan Procyshen, who had advanced to third base on Lopez's groundout. Salem led 3-1 after six innings, as LHP Justin Thomas got Devers to ground out with the bases loaded, which ended the inning.

Kent pitched into the seventh frame for Salem but walked C Raudy Read to start the frame and gave up a one-out single to DH Alec Keller. With men on the corners and one out, RHP Jamie Callahan entered from the Salem bullpen and struck out Carey, before Norfork flied out to right field. Stevenson then led off the eighth with a single but Callahan retired the next three hitters, the righties first scoreless outing in his last eight appearances.

Thomas pitched a perfect seventh inning for the P-Nats, but the Red Sox broke the game open with a four-run eighth. After Procyshen popped up to first base to start the inning, five straight Salem hitters came up with a hit. Lopez tripled off of the wall in left field, LF Bryan Hudson had an RBI triple to the left field wall, Moncada had an RBI double off of the wall in left-centerfield, SS Mauricio Dubon singled, and Devers had an RBI single. 1B Nick Longhi capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly, as Salem went on top 7-1 after eight innings.

After 1.2 scoreless innings from Callahan, RHP Simon Mercedes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with three groundball outs, which clinched the division for the Red Sox. Despite starting the night 1-10 with RISP, Salem went four for its last six with a man in scoring position in route to the 7-1 win. Potomac meanwhile went just 1-9 with RISP and left six men on base.

A season high two games under .500, the P-Nats will turn to LHP Matthew Crownover (0-2, 7.36) Tuesday night in an effort to even up the series. Crownover has given up two home runs in each of his first two Potomac starts, both losses. With the division in hand, Salem will turn to RHP Travis Lakins (5-2, 5.77). Lakins allowed just one run over six innings in Salem's lone victory at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge this season. First pitch Tuesday night is at 7:05pm.
