Portland Sea Dogs News Release

(Akron, Ohio)- The Akron Aeros exploded for nine runs in the first three innings of Saturday night's game, and that proved to be plenty in a 12-5 win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Canal Park. The victory gives Akron twelve wins in a row.

After Nick Hagadone sent the Sea Dogs down in order to start the game, the Aeros wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Tim Fedroff and Jason Kipnis started Akron's half of the first with back-to-back walks, before Lonnie Chisenhall singled to center. Matt Sheely had a difficult time handling the ball, allowing all three runners to advance an extra base. Matt McBride flew out to center field, and John Drennen grounded out to short, but both plays produced runs. After Carlos Rivero singled, Jerad Head doubled, putting the home team ahead, 4-0.

Ryne Miller's struggles continued in the second, as Akron doubled the lead. Back-to-back walks to Fedroff and Kipnis started the inning once again, before Chisenhall doubled home the fifth run of the game. McBride followed with a double, driving in Kipnis and Chisenhall. After Drennen singled McBride to third, Rivero brought him in with a single up the middle.

The Aeros added one more run in the third, as Fedroff picked up his third walk of the night, and was doubled around by Chisenhall. Chisenhall's double came off of Santo Luis' first pitch of the contest, but the run was charged to Miller (2-4). Portland's starter lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs, seven hits, and five walks.

Luis proved to be one of the brightest spots of the game for the Sea Dogs, as he relieved Miller with three and one-third scoreless innings. In that time, Luis allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out two.

With Luis in the ball game, Portland began to chip away at the Aeros' large lead. In the top of the fourth, Akron starter Nick Hagadone ran into control problems, walking three of the first four batters in the frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, Will Vazquez singled home Yamaico Navarro with the Sea Dogs' first run. Nate Spears and Ryan Khoury followed with walks, bringing in two more runs, while ending Hagadone's day on the mound. Hagadone pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, three hits, and six walks, receiving a no-decision.

Paolo Espino came in for Hagadone in the fourth, and got Ray Chang to fly out to center field, ending the inning. Espino (7-2) went on to throw three and one-third innings, allowing two runs and five hits, while striking out two.

Espino's lone blemish occurred in the seventh. Luis Exposito singled with one out, and after Yamaico Navarro struck out, Chih-Hsien Chiang homered to center field, bringing the Sea Dogs within four.

Akron added three more runs against Mitch Herold in the eighth, as the home team earned a 12-5 victory.

The Sea Dogs and Aeros will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:35. Portland will send Stephen Fife (2-1, 4.13) to the mound, while Akron counters with Alex White (2-1, 1.40).
