Stockton Ports News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Giants scored six runs in four innings off Stockton Ports starter Grant Holmes, who debuted as an Oakland A's farmhand on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. San Jose had just one hit over the final four innings, but the early runs proved enough as the Ports fell by a final of 6-3 with the Giants evening the series at a game apiece.

Holmes gave up back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the first and then walked Dylan Davis to load the bases. Jonah Arenado followed and was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run of the ballgame. Mitch Delfino came up next and hit a sac-fly to left to give the Giants a 2-0 advantage.

San Jose doubled its lead over the next two innings. Ty Ross led off the second with a single and scored three batters later on an RBI groundout by Robbie Garvey. In the third, Arenado opened the frame with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Daniel Carbonell to make it a 4-0 San Jose lead.

Stockton's first run of the game came on a milestone moment for Sandber Pimentel as he hit a solo home run with two outs in the fourth, his 20th of the season, to make it a 4-1 game.

The Giants got that run back plus another in the fourth in a tough-luck moment for Holmes. With two on and two out, Arenado hit a pop fly to left field that was lost in the lights by left fielder James Harris. The ball fell in untouched and went as a two-run double for Arenado that ballooned the San Jose lead to 6-1. Because of an error that opened the inning, the runs were unearned for Holmes.

Holmes suffered the loss in his Ports debut, going four innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out one.

Giants starter Dan Slania (1-0), who came down from Triple-A Sacramento to make the spot-start, induced three double-plays over the first five innings. In the sixth with runners at the corners and one out, Jose Brizuela grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in Joe Bennie from third and make it a 6-2 contest. It was the final run allowed by Slania who picked up the win after going seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five.

Evan Manarino took over for Holmes in the fifth as he made his California League debut for Stockton. Manarino would retire the first seven batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk to Delfino in the seventh. Manarino gave up a two-out infield single to Cristian Paulino in the eighth, but that would end up being the only hit he allowed in four strong innings. Manarino retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced in four scoreless frames while striking out five.

Pat Young took over for the Giants in the eighth and set the side down in order in his first frame. In the ninth, Young hit Brizuela to open the inning and after Richie Martin reached on a fielder's choice force play, Seth Brown doubled to put runners at second and third. Iolana Akau would ground out to drive in Stockton's third run of the game. With the possible-tying run in the on-deck circle, James Harris grounded out to second to end the ballgame.

Young allowed one run on one hit in two innings of work to close out the contest for the Giants.

Stockton and San Jose play the third game of their four-game series on Saturday at Municipal Stadium. Brett Graves (6-8, 5.00 ERA) makes the start for the Ports, opposed by Giants right-hander Jose Morel (2-5, 5.09 ERA). First pitch is set for 5 p.m. PDT.
