Jewell Tosses Gem, Outdueled by Rawhide's Young

Visalia, CA- The Visalia Rawhide came out on top of a brilliant pitchers' duel over the Inland Empire 66ers 2-1 at Recreation Park on Friday. Visalia starter Alex Young was masterful tossing complete game allowing just an unearned run in the ninth to earn the win and best Sixers' starter Jake Jewell who dominated for a season-best seven innings allowing a single run on five hits with no walks and eight Ks.

Visalia (66-45, 20-22) scored the first run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Robelys Reyes singled and then scored on a triple to left by Cody Revis. The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Inland Empire reliever Sam Holland walked Visalia's Colin Bray to open the frame. The walk was the lone base-on-balls issued by either staff. The next batter was hit by a pitch. A sac bunt and an Austin Byler sac fly got the insurance run home making it 2-0.

Alex Young (2-3) gave up a leadoff single to Michael Hermosillo in the top of the ninth. Hermosillo moved to second on an error by Regis in left. Eventually Hermosillo, who was 2-for-3 with a sac bunt, scored on a RBI ground out by Hutton Moyer to get the Sixers their only run. Young finished off the game by striking out Jared Foster to give him the complete game allowing just four hits with no walks and six Ks. Jewell fell to 1-11 on the season with the tough-luck loss. Michael Strentz 12-game hit-streak was snapped with a 0-for-3 night for Inland Empire (38-78, 15-27).
