Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA- Alex Young turned in a career best outing on Friday Night as he went the distance and allowed one unearned run while inking his first complete game in a 2-1 victory for Visalia (66-46, 20-22) over the Inland Empire 66ers (38-74, 15-27) at Rawhide Ballpark.
LHP Alex Young (2-3, 3.77) had three separate stretches where he retired five in a row, seven in a row and nine in a row en route to the complete game win.
Of the four hits he allowed, three were singles, one an infield single and a double and they were scattered over four different innings. The lone unearned run Inland Empire was able to score came in the top of the ninth after Visalia built a 2-0 lead on a CF Michael Hermosillo single. An error charged to LF Cody Regis moved Hermosillo to second base on the play. A 2B David Fletcher groundout pushed Hermosillo to third and he scored on 3B Hutton Moyer's RBI groundout.
The Rawhide, against RHP Jake Jewell (1-11, 6.22), were held scoreless through the first four innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when SS Robelys Reyes singled with two outs that Visalia was able to get a run across. Regis hit a long fly ball to the left field wall that the left fielder Jared Foster jumped for and had go in and out of the glove for an RBI triple to give Visalia a 1-0 lead.
Jewell pitched well enough to win, going seven innings and allowing five hits and one run (earned) with no walks and he struck out eight but took the tough luck loss.
RHP Sam Holland came in for the eighth inning after Young retired the 66ers one, two, three in both the seventh and eighth innings. Visalia got what ultimately was the game winner against Holland in the eighth. CF Colin Bray, who extended his season long hitting streak to nine games, walked to begin the rally. RF Victor Reyes was then hit by a pitch. 3B Marty Herum laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both runners up and 1B Austin Byler lined a sacrifice fly out to centerfield for a 2-0 advantage.
Young came back out for the ninth and allowed the leadoff single to Hermosillo before retiring the next three straight to close out his first career complete game victory and give Visalia a 2-1 win.
The series continues tomorrow night from Rawhide Ballpark. Game Three is another 7:00 p.m. first pitch and RHP Joel Payamps (4-3, 4.38) for Visalia against RHP Alex Klonowski (8-11, 5.55) for Inland Empire.
