Stockton Ports News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports blitzed the San Jose Giants early on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium. The Ports knocked Giants starter Jose Morel (2-6) from the contest before he recoded an out in the first inning and went on to build an 8-0 lead on their way to a 9-4 win over the Giants to take a 2-1 lead in the four-game set.
James Harris opened the ballgame by drawing a walk and then scored on an ensuing two-run homer by Mikey White. After B.J. Boyd singled, he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Joe Bennie then drew a walk, at which point Morel was lifted for Dusten Knight, who got back-to-back strikeouts and a flyout to avoid any further damage.
Morel would suffer the loss as he did not record an out. He allowed two runs on two hits while walking two.
Knight allowed his first run in the second. Seth Brown doubled to open the frame and scored two batters later on an RBI single by Harris to make it a 3-0 score. Knight then retired six straight batters taking him one out deep into the fourth. After back-to-back singles and a walk, Knight was lifted for Jeff Soptic, who issued a bases-loaded walk to White to make it a 4-0 score. Boyd followed with a grand slam down the left field line, Stockton's second grand slam of the season, to double the Ports lead to 8-0.
Knight allowed four runs on four hits over 3.1 innings pitched. Soptic, after allowing the grand slam, would retire 11 of his final 12 batters. He surrendered two runs on two hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings of relief.
Ports starter Brett Graves (7-8) allowed his lone run of the contest in the fourth. Miguel Gomez led off with a single and scored three batters later on a sac-fly by Robbie Garvey to make it an 8-1 game. Graves would earn the win, going five innings and allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
Victor Veliz took over for Graves to begin the sixth and had Gomez reach on an error committed by first baseman Sandber Pimentel. T.J. Bennett followed with an RBI double to left that scored Gomez from first. Rene Melendez came up next and drove in Bennett with an RBI single to left to make it an 8-3 score. Veliz retired the next three batters and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits in his lone inning of work.
D.J. Snelten took over for Soptic in the eighth and issued a leadoff walk to Martin. Three batters later with two outs, Harris hit a tapper to the left side of the infield. Snelten fielded the ball and tried to make a desperate throw off his back foot that sailed into right field, allowing Martin to score and making it a 9-3 Stockton advantage. The run was unearned and the only run allowed by Snelten in his lone inning of relief.
San Jose scored the final run of the night in the bottom of the eighth when Bennett homered off Ports reliever Corey Miller cut the Stockton lead to 9-4. It was the only run allowed by Miller in his two innings of relief.
Reyes Moronta pitched a scoreless ninth for San Jose while Koby Gauna pitched around a pair of singles in the bottom of the ninth, getting Mitch Delfino to hit into a game-ending double-play.
The Ports and Giants play the final game of their season series on Sunday night at Municipal Stadium. James Naile (1-0, 4.86 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Giants left-hander Mark Reyes (8-5, 4.36 ERA). First pitch is set for 5 p.m. PDT.
