San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - 2015 California League All-Star Dan Slania returned to the Giants on Friday and delivered an excellent seven-inning start to lead San Jose to a 6-3 victory over the Stockton Ports at Municipal Stadium. The Giants (58-54) scored all six of their runs over the first four innings en route to evening the series at a game apiece.

Slania (1-0), who joined San Jose earlier Friday from Triple-A Sacramento, allowed just two runs during his seven-inning performance. The right-hander surrendered six hits, walked four, struck out five and induced three double plays.

Jonah Arenado (2-for-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI) doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead the Giants offensive attack. Rando Moreno (2-for-5) and Robbie Garvey (2-for-4, RBI) also finished with two hits apiece.

San Jose jumped out early against Stockton starter Grant Holmes scoring twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Moreno and Garvey began the frame before Dylan Davis walked to load the bases. Arenado was then hit by a pitch to force home Moreno with the first run of the night. Mitch Delfino followed with a sacrifice fly to left plating Garvey to make it 2-0.

The Giants then extended their lead with single runs in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Ty Ross led off with a single before moving to second on Cristian Paulino's sacrifice bunt. Following a Moreno single to put runners on the corners, Garvey grounded out to score Ross for a 3-0 cushion.

In the bottom of the third, Arenado led off with a double and scored on Daniel Carbonell's two-out single into left pushing the advantage to 4-0.

Meanwhile, Slania began his start with three scoreless innings. The right-hander yielded just one hit over the first three frames - a broken-bat infield single to Sandber Pimentel in the top of the second. Slania issued a one-out walk in the top of the first, but quickly got out of the inning thanks to a double play. He then used the double play ball to work around a leadoff walk in the third.

Stockton scored their first run when Pimentel lined a two-out solo homer to right in the top of the fourth. The home run, Pimentel's team-leading 20th of the season, trimmed the Giants lead to 4-1. Slania followed the homer by issuing back-to-back walks, but retired the next hitter, Seth Brown, on a groundout to retire the side.

San Jose then pushed across two more runs against Holmes in the bottom of the fourth. Paulino led off by reaching on an error before Garvey singled with one out. A Holmes wild pitch then advanced the runners to second and third. Davis followed with a grounder back to the mound that saw Holmes throw out Paulino at the plate for the second out. However, Arenado followed with a high fly ball into left that was lost in the lights by left fielder James Harris. Arenado was credited with a double on the play as both Garvey and Davis scored to make it 6-1.

Slania induced his third double play of the game in the top of the fifth to work around a one-out single. The Giants starter threw only five pitches in the fifth. In the sixth, two singles put runners on the corners with one out for the Ports before Jose Brizuela delivered an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 6-2. Slania though prevented further damage in the inning before breezing through a nine-pitch 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Pat Young (2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) relieved Slania to begin the top of the eighth and struck out two in a perfect inning to maintain the 6-2 lead. In the ninth, Young plunked Brizuela to start the inning before Brown doubled to deep left center with one out putting runners on second and third. Iolana Akau then grounded out to first plating a run as the Ports pulled to within 6-3. However with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, Young retired Harris on a groundout to second to end the game.

Holmes (8-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out one. Evan Manarino threw four scoreless innings of relief for Stockton allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.
