Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (20-15-1-0) shut out the Binghamton Senators (15-15-3-1) 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine. It was the Pirates second straight shutout, and fifth win in a row. Darian Dziurzynski scored two goals in the decision, while Jordon Southorn recorded two assists.
The first period got off to a rolling start, with both teams appearing to go through the motions. The Pirates drew first blood in the opening period, however, when Dziurzynski scored at 14:19, assisted by Justin Hache and Southorn.
The second period went by mostly uneventfully, save for a lone slashing call on Binghamton. With time almost up on the clock, Dylan Reese swatted the puck in the net off of the face-off at 19:56. Brendan Shinnimin and Justin Hodgman assisted Reese on the goal.
Dziurzynski struck again in the third period, netting his second of the night at 2:51, assisted by again Southorn and Francis Wathier. The third period took a turn for the chippy side, with calls for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct called on both teams. However the Pirates were able to hold on for the win and the eventual shutout.
Mike McKenna (15-12-1) was masterful in net for the Pirates. He blocked all 35 Senator shots fired on the night. Peter Mannino (0-2-1), who previously played for the Pirates this season, took the net for the Senators and blocked 35 of 39 Pirate shots.
The Pirates host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. for Go Red Night, presented by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Fans are encouraged to wear red to the game to help support women's heart health, and the Pirates will be wearing their red away jerseys at home for the only time this season.
