Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Cyclones forward Dustin Sproat recorded his first three goal game of his career and the club used it to build a 4-0 edge in a 6-2 win over the Johnstown Chiefs on Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The win was the sixth straight for the first place Cyclones. Sproat and Jimmy Kilpatrick each had four point nights.
The Cyclones exploded for three opening period goals to grab a 3-0 edge at the end of the first period. Scott Reynolds picked up his 18th goal of the season as Brett Motherwell and former Chief Ryan Del Monte, in his first game against his old team, having the assists at 6:32. Dustin Sproat would add a pair of power play goals, his 16th and 17th, at 10:34 and 19:14. Brock Sheahan and Jimmy Kilpatrick had the assists on the first score and Kilpatrick and Barret Ehgoetz had the helpers on the second. Cincinnati had another chance with a penalty shot for Matt Pierce at 13:53 that went wide of the mark. Cincinnati controlled the shots in the first period, 11-5. The Cyclones were two for three on the power play, while Johnstown was zero for one with the extra attacker.
The three first period goals marked the 13th time this season that the Cyclones registered a trio of scores in a frame and the fourth time in six contests against Johnstown. Johnstown scored a pair of goals and was able to whittle the lead to 4-2 after two periods. The Cyclones extended the lead to 4-0 when Sproat completed the hat trick with a power play marker at 4:49 of the stanza with his 18th goal from Kilpatrick and Ehgoetz. The Chiefs would get a man-advantage goal from Jordan Morrison (eighth at 12:28) and former Cyclone Bryan Marshall (15th at 18:18). The shots favored Cincinnati, 14-7, in the period.
The third period saw Cincinnati score both goals to close the scoring. Jamie Coghlan's first goal of the season came from the slot at 5:42 as Mark Voakes and Matt Pierce had the assists. Kilpatrick got his eighth goal at 18:15, as Sproat got the assist and each player completed their four point nights. The shots favored the Cyclones, 13-7, in the period and 38-19 for the game. Cincinnati was three for eight on the power play, while Johnstown was one for three with the man advantage.
Robert Mayer won his fifth straight game with a 17 save performance, improving to 15-7. John Murray dropped to 4-14-2 on the year with a 34 save performance.
The crowd of 6423 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 91,330-an average of 3513 per game. It was the 14th largest crowd in team history and fourth-largest this season. It marks the fifth time in 2009-10 that the club has attracted more than 6000 fans to a contest. The Cyclones sit 16th in the ECHL in attendance, 19.9 percent ahead of last season's pace through 26 home games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has attracted more fans than it had through 31 games in 2008-09 (through March 18, 2009).
Cincinnati is 33-17-1, while Johnstown is 14-28-8. The teams meet again Sunday night at 7pm at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena for three games next week, when Toledo visits on Wednesday and Wheeling is in for games on Friday and Saturday. All three games start at 7:30pm.
Cincinnati leads the North Division with 67 points. Kalamazoo, Wheeling and Toledo are tied for second with 56 points.
