Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - After being shut out for only the second time this season the night before, the Walleye looked to rebound against division rival Kalamazoo on Saturday. Toledo came in to the game with a four game losing streak, but could force a tie in the standings with the Wings with a win at home.

Much like last night, the opening period on Saturday was an evenly played and hard fought battle, resulting in a scoreless start. Even though the Wings outshot the home team, Toledo had the advantage on the power plays. Halfway through the first, the Walleye had a 5-on-3 advantage, but were unable to capitalize, thus extending their scoreless streak to five periods.

However, the milestone crowd in a sold out Lucas County Arena had a goal to cheer for in the second period. Toledo once again had the man advantage, but did not miss the opportunity to take the lead.

Malcolm MacMillan led an odd-man rush and passed ahead to a streaking Joe Charlebois. The pass came right in front of the crease between two Wings' defenseman, where Charlebois tapped in the puck for his second of the year and a 1-0 Toledo lead at 5:23.

Moments later, at about the nine minute mark, Mike Hedden found himself alone in front for a one-on-one on the goalie, but was stoned by Jeremy Duchesne. Even though the save was made, Toledo continued to pour the pressure on the Wings' zone for the remainder of the period, setting the tone for the third.

Toledo took the goal lead and control to the intermission and built off of the momentum. At 5:02 into the third, Charlebois struck again. MacMillan made a pass to the defenseman, who fired a wide-open slapshot from the point, which was tipped in front by a Wings' player as it trickled around Duchesne for his second goal of the game.

Charlebois may have been the offensive surge the Walleye needed, but it was Jordan Pearce who made the headline with his first career shutout. Pearce stopped all 36 Kalamazoo shots, helping in ending the Walleye losing skid.

Evan Rankin added the empty-netter for the 3-0 lead, the final score. It was good for his team-best 21st goal of the year.
