Johnstown Chiefs News Release

CINCINNATI, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs fell victim to one of the hottest teams in the ECHL on Saturday night. The Cyclones won their sixth straight game by a score of 6-2.

After shutting out the Toledo Walleye the night before, Cincinnati came out storming in the opening period. Shots favored the Cyclones 11-5 in the opening 20 minutes and the score wasn't much better as they built a 3-0 lead. With a wrist shot from between the hash marks, Scott Reynolds netted his his 18th of the season 6:32 into the contest. From there the Cyclones' power play took over with Dustin Sproat doing most of the heavy lifting. At 10:34 he redirected a Brock Sheahan point shot to double the lead and then wristed one past John Murray on the glove side at 19:14 to cap the first period scoring. Murray prevented further damage by denying a Matt Pierce penalty shot attempt at 13:53.

Cincinnati had three consecutive power plays to start the second period, and on the first Sproat completed the hat trick with a hard wrist shot from the right wing at 4:44. Trevor Hendrikx took each of the first three Chiefs' penalties in the second, but atoned for the mistakes by helping set up Jordan Morrison's first goal as a Chief. On the power play at 12:28, Morrison deflected the shot past Robert Mayer and began to chip away at the Cyclones' lead. Chanse Fitzpatrick earned the secondary helper. With the clock winding down in the second, it looked like Cincinnati would take the three-goal lead into the third, but former Cyclone Bryan Marshall had something to say about that. Set up by Russ Sinkewich and Troy Schwab, Marshall banked a shot off of Mayer's arm and into the cage.

There would be no third period dramatics in the Queen City for the Chiefs as Cincinnati potted two more markers and built back its four-goal advantage. Jamie Coghlan netted his first of the season with a wrist shot from the high slot at the 5:42 mark. After the Coghlan goal, Johnstown had two extremely high quality chances, but Matthew Kang and Sean Berkstresser each had their shots hit iron and bounce away from the net. Jimmy Kilpatrick earned his fourth point of the night with his eighth goal of the season at 18:15, walking the puck off of the wall following a faceoff win by Sproat who also finished with four points.

Murray turned in 32 saves in sustaining his 14th loss of the season. The Chiefs went 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-8 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to Johnstown on Sunday, February 14 against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:05. The Chiefs will holding a coloring contest for kids in attendance sponsored by BIC.
