Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Marcus Walden impressed for a second consecutive appearance out of the bullpen, but a dominant pitching performance from the Durham Bulls downed the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-0, on Saturday night at McCoy Stadium in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 11,000 fans.
In a game that only featured a combined nine hits, Durham (68-54) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the sixth on a homer and added an insurance run in the ninth to defeat Pawtucket (59-64), which won the first two meetings of the four-game series Thursday and Friday. Saturday's tilt was delayed 80 minutes due to rain before the ballgame.
Walden fired two hitless innings out of the bullpen and has now posted 5.2 consecutive scoreless frames over his last three appearances. On a bullpen day after scheduled starter Justin Haley was scratched, spot starter Fernando Rodriguez Jr. admirably spun 3.2 shutout stanzas - continuing a strong stretch in which he's only allowed three earned runs in his last 20.2 innings dating back to July 17, good for a 1.31 ERA.
Pawtucket shortstop Mike Miller (2-for-3) provided half of the team's hits and is now hitting .368 in his last 32 games since June 29.
Durham, however, received a gem from starter Ryan Weber (W, 8-5), who tossed seven shutout stanzas with five strikeouts and no walks on just 81 pitches. Dynamite relievers Colin Poche and Ian Gibaut (S, 11) added hitless innings and combined to strike out three.
In the top of the sixth inning, Durham cleanup man Brandon Snyder launched a 403-foot, two-run homer over the left-field advertisements to start the scoring.
Three innings later, the Bulls capitalized on a Pawtucket error to make it 3-0.
On Sunday at 1:35 p.m., the PawSox conclude their four-game series with Durham at McCoy Stadium. Pawtucket right-hander Mike Shawaryn (2-0, 2.95) is slated to start opposite Bulls righty Andrew Moore (6-6, 4.48). The game will be televised live on myRITV, and radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 1:05 p.m.
Pawtucket's homestand runs Monday-Sunday (August 13-19), and good tickets are available. Fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
