Columbus, OH - The Syracuse Chiefs used a five-run ninth inning to beat the Columbus Clippers, 8-3, on Saturday night at Huntington Park. Syracuse racked up 18 hits, one shy of a season high, and every Chiefs batters had a hit in the win. Jose Marmolejos drove in four runs and Victor Robles led the Chiefs with four hits.
Syracuse (54-71) scored the game's decisive runs in the top of the ninth inning. Victor Robles singled off Shao-Ching Chiang to begin the inning, and then Andrew Stevenson reached on a bunt single. Columbus turned to Jon Edwards, who walked Matt Reynolds on four pitches to load the bases. Marmolejos followed with a double to left-center field, clearing the bases to give the Chiefs a 6-3 lead. Marmolejos then moved to third base on a Yadiel Hernandez groundout. Two batters later, with two outs, Adrian Sanchez tripled, scoring Marmolejos to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Chris Dominguez then collected his third hit of the game, a single up the middle, bringing home Sanchez to extend the Syracuse advantage to five, 8-3.
Columbus (67-58) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning off Syracuse starting pitcher Kyle McGowin. Brandon Barnes and Connor Marabell both singled to begin the frame, putting runners on the corners. With Eric Haase batting, a wild pitch moved Marabell up to second base. McGowin then struck out both Haase and Adam Rosales for the first two outs. Bobby Bradley followed with a single to center field, scoring both Barnes and Marabell for a 2-0 lead.
The Chiefs responded in the top of the second against Clippers starter Josh Tomlin. With one out, Pedro Severino hammered a ball over the wall in center field for a solo home run that cut the deficit to one, 2-1. That homer is the sixth for Severino in 25 games played with Syracuse this season.
