Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced three transactions, with all three taking effect immediately. Forward Ben Duffy has been recalled to the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, forward Scott Zurevinski has signed a 25-game professional tryout with Hamilton, and the Nailers have claimed forward Shane Bakker off of waivers.
Duffy, 21, experienced a short, but successful stay in Wheeling, as he joined the club in Elmira on November 29th. After being held off of the scoresheet that night, Ben made an impact in the following game, lighting the lamp twice against the Toledo Walleye at WesBanco Arena. The first of his two career goals came shorthanded, as the Nailers extended their point streak to nine games that night. The Lower Sackville, NS native added an assist against Cincinnati on Sunday, and now has five points in 16 games as a pro, between Wheeling and Hamilton.
Zurevinski, 25, is in the midst of his second full season as a pro, as well as his second with the Nailers. After totaling 12 goals, 13 assists, and 25 points in 49 games last season, Scott has three goals, three assists, and six points in 16 games this year. Four of his six points have come during the last five games, as the Saskatoon, SK native found the back of the net in consecutive games in Cincinnati, while also tacking on a pair of assists last weekend. This will be Zurevinski's second taste of AHL action, after he appeared in eight games with the St. John's IceCaps during the 2011-12 campaign.
Bakker, 26, will make his professional debut with the Nailers, after having spent each of the last five seasons at Carleton University in Ottawa. During his time with the Ravens, Shane was able to combine scoring and physicality, accumulating 17 goals, 31 assists, 48 points, and 398 penalty minutes in 121 games. His most productive year was 2011-12, when he amassed seven goals, 13 points, and 86 penalty minutes, despite playing in a career-low 20 games. The Ottawa, ON native suited up in two preseason games with the Orlando Solar Bears, earning one assist and 18 penalty minutes.
Shane Bakker will wear #10 for the Nailers, and could make his debut as early as Friday night, when Wheeling hosts Reading at 7:00.
