Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC: Brandon Hynes was the lone Road Warrior to find the back of the net in a 5-1 loss against the Kalamazoo Wings on Thursday night.
The first period started with the Road Warriors grabbing momentum and scoring opportunities. The Wings picked up the pace and scored eight minutes into the period on a power play goal by Yanni Gourde. The Road Warriors had many scoring chances throughout of the period, but goaltender Jordan Binnington remained solid and prevented all shots from going past him. Knapp remained strong in the net during the course of the period but the Wings found the back of the net again after a scramble in front of the net. David Pacan got a shot through and bring the score to 2-0 in favor of Kalamazoo with 7:07 left in the period.
In the second period, Binnington kept the Road Warriors scoreless, stopping all 13 shots that came his way. Knapp made 15 saves, but let up one goal from the Wings in the frame. Gourde gave Ludwig Blomstrand a give-and-go pass that Blomstrand converted on to bring Kalamazoo up 3-0 halfway through the period. The remainder of the second period stayed scoreless and the Road Warriors trailed by three going into the third.
The Kalamazoo Wings killed a penalty early in the period. Justin Taylor found a scoring opportunity and fired a slap shot past Knapp. The shorthanded goal put the Wings up by a score of 4-0. Taylor also scored a backhanded goal just under four minutes left in the period. The Road Warriors eventually responded as Hynes fired a one-timer into the net with 44 seconds remaining. This goal put Hynes on a two-game goal streak. The third period ended with a series of fights with Road Warriors' Charlie Dodero, Bretton Cameron, and Sean Berkstresser dropping the gloves against Kalamazoo players. The game ended with the Road Warriors falling 5-1.
The Road Warriors will seek for redemption against the Wings Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
