Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville, NC - The Drive (45-35, 5-5) used a solid effort from its pitching staff all night long as the catalyst to a 4-1 victory over the Asheville Tourists (50-30, 4-6) in the finale of a brief two-game series at McCormick Field on Saturday night. The win is Greenville's fourth in a row against the Tourists in a span stretching back to earlier this month.
The Drive drew first blood in their first at bat as Che-Hsuan Lin reached second on a pair of Tourists errors and scored on Yamaico Navarro's RBI single. The Tourists struck back in the first when Michael Mitchell doubled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a passed ball during Darin Holcomb's at bat to tie the game at one.
Pitching dominated throughout as both teams received strong efforts from their starters. Cory Riordan (6-7) picked up the loss despite 7.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Felix Doubront (8-5) was one step better for Greenville - six innings of one-run baseball on three hits, a walk and seven strikeouts.
Riordan made his first mistake of the night in the top of the sixth with one out, as Lin sent his 4th home run of the year over the right-centerfield fence to give Greenville the lead. With two outs, Riordan hit Navarro in the back on a 2-2 pitch, allowed him to reach second on a wild pitch and then surrendered an RBI single to Mike Jones to bring the Drive lead to 3-1. Navarro added another run in the eighth with his second RBI single of the night.
Greenville's bullpen finished off the Tourists with three scoreless innings of no-hit baseball. Felix Ventura pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season.
The series moves to Greenville as these two teams will meet for three games at Fluor Field starting Sunday afternoon. Sheng-An Kuo (8-5) takes the hill for the Tourists and he'll face lefty Jose Capellan (1-1, 6.35). First pitch is at 4:05 p.m.
Sunday marks the first of a seven game homestand, and is also "Family FunDay" at Fluor Field where children get to run the bases following the game. The seven-game home stand will have an "All-American Fest" theme.
