Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory found itself on the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep against Augusta on Saturday, losing game one, 6-3, and game two, 9-1. Game one saw the Crawdads take an early 1-0 on an Albert Laboy lead-off home run and later take a 3-2 lead into the top of the sixth inning.
But the GreenJackets scored four runs on three hits in the decisive sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead and not look back.
Dustin Molleken started for Hickory and allowed two runs in four innings for a no-decision. Augusta starter Madison Bumgarner earned the win, improving to 8-2 with five innings of work that saw him surrender three runs (one earned) in five innings. The Crawdads' Matt McSwain took the loss to drop to 3-3 after allowing all four runs (two earned) in the sixth inning en route to his three innings of total work.
In game two, Hickory (3-7, 33-47) wouldn't even enjoy the thrill of an early lead, as Augusta (8-2, 49-30) used a Garrett Baker two-run home run in the first inning to take a lead it would not relinquish.
For the second straight game, the sixth inning proved the Crawdads' undoing, as the GreenJackets batted around to plate five runs. Nick Noonan highlighted the scoring with a bases-loaded triple that made the score 7-0 at the time.
Hickory's lone run came on Matt Hague's lead-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the first long ball as a Crawdad for Hague, who joined the team Thursday after being drafted in the 9th round of the 2008 draft out of Oklahoma State.
Augusta starter Craig Clark put a spell on Hickory in the second game, throwing six shutout innings with four strikeouts while allowing two hits and no walks. He improved to 6-1 with the victory.
Rafael De Los Santos started and took the defeat for Hickory, dropping to 2-7 on the year after allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits in five innings.
It was the second time this season the Crawdads have been swept in a doubleheader, following a pair of losses April 20 at Asheville. Hickory has also swept an opponent in a twinbill once this season, beating West Virginia twice on April 6.
As for Augusta, it marked the first time in three doubleheaders this year the 'Jackets took both ends from a foe.
The teams return to action for game three of their five-game series Sunday afternoon at 5. It is Conrad's Little Claw Club Sunday, Safe Harbor/House of Refuge collection and Baseball America night.
Starting pitchers will be RHP Bradley Clapp (1-6, 3.96 ERA) for Hickory against RHP Waldis Joaquin (0-1, 3.79 ERA) for Augusta.
