Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Greenville Drive used five doubles to defeat the Gnats 7-2 Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. With the win, the Drive (26-18/64-50) closed to within a game and a half behind the Gnats (28-17/67-47) for first place in the Southern Division second half standings.
Gnats catcher Albert Cordero was 2-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to a personal-best 10 games. In his last 10 games, he is hitting .513/.545/.769 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, four walks and zero strikeouts.
The Drive took control of Wednesday's game with a three-run fifth inning that expanded Greenville's advantage from 3-2 to 6-2. The big blow was a two-run double by Drive C Christian Vazquez that put Greenville up 5-2. Vazquez was 3-5 with three doubles and five RBI. The three doubles and five RBI are the most in a single game in 2011 by a Gnats' opponent.
Savannah briefly took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Down 1-0 entering the frame, Cordero singled and then 1B Joe Bonfe launched a long home run over the left field wall to put the Gnats in front. However, the Gnats picked up just two more base runners the rest of the game after Bonfe's home run. Cordero doubled in the fourth inning and RF Rafael Fernandez doubled in the ninth.
Drive pitchers retired 23 of the final 25 Gnats batters they faced. Starter Kyle Stroup fanned six and did not walk a batter in his six innings to pick up the win for Greenville, improving to 4-5. Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton was charged with six runs, all earned, in his 4.1 innings of work to take the loss to fall to 4-3.
The Gnats will hand the ball to LHP Angel Cuan (9-2, 3.19) against Drive RHP Brandon Workman (3-6, 3.92) Thursday night, the final Thirsty Thursday of the 2011 regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
