Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

TULSA - The Drillers plated five first-inning runs and withstood three Corpus Christi rallies to best the Hooks, 9-8, before 5,476 fans Sunday afternoon at ONEOK Field. The four-game series is level at 1.

Gavin Lux opened the home first with a home run to right field off Carson LaRue. Following a one-out infield single by Zach Reks, the Drillers (16-12) worked four consecutive walks, ending LaRue's day. Jared Walker greeted Brendan Feldmann (1-2) with a two-run single, capping the five-run outburst.

The Hooks (14-15) drove in a pair in the second when Lorenzo Quintana sent a single through the right side, chasing home Josh Rojas and Chas McCormick.

Corpus Christi added three markers in the third on consecutive two-out RBI hits by Rojas, McCormick, and Quintana. It was a double by Quintana that briefly tied the game at 5.

D.J. Peters opened the home third with his second home runs in as many nights. The clout to left ignited a four-run frame. Gavin Lux capped the response with a sac fly to center. Two of the runs charged to Feldmann were unearned as the home club posted a 9-5 lead.

Shea Spitzbarth (1-0) and Michael Boyle combined for five scoreless innings in relief of Drillers starter Yordy Cabrera.

Meanwhile, Hooks right-handers Colin McKee and Justin Ferrell teamed to blank Tulsa over five innings of work.

An error by first baseman Jared Walker opened the door to another Hooks charge in the ninth. Layne Somsen surrendered a double to Anibal Sierra, setting the stage for a two-run single by Ronnie Dawson. With the Hooks down to their final strike, Granden Goetzman, representing the tying run, seared a liner into right, scoring Dawson to pull the Hooks within one. Somsen then induced a ground ball from Rojas to end the game.

The series continues Monday afternoon with the Drillers sending Mitchell White to the mound. The Hooks have not officially announced their starter. The 12:05 tilt can be heard in Corpus Christi on 1400 KUNO-AM.
