Dragons Score 3 in 10th Inning, Battle Back to Beat Lansing 5-4

Dayton, Ohio-Andy Sugilio raced in from third base with the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Dayton Dragons came from behind in both the ninth and 10th innings to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts 5-4 on Saturday night. The game was played before a crowd of 8,363 at Fifth Third Field.

The game was tied 1-1 going to the top of the ninth when Lansing scored a single run to take the lead. Dayton's Stuart Fairchild led off the bottom of the ninth with a long home run to left field to tie the game, 2-2. The homer was Fairchild's fifth of the year.

The game went to extra innings. Lansing scored two runs in the top of the 10th, getting a two-out, two-run single from Kevin Vicuna to make it 4-2.

By rule, the Dragons started the bottom of the 10th with a runner at second, and Jose Garcia opened the inning with a bloop double to right field, moving Leandro Santana to third. After Jeter Downs struck out, Sugilio lined a single to center field, scoring both Santana and Garcia to tie the game. Michael Beltre was intentionally walked, leaving runners at first and second with one out. With Stuart Fairchild batting, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Fairchild struck out for the second out, but with Montrell Marshall at the plate, Lansing pitcher Matt Shannon bounced a breaking ball passed the catcher for a wild pitch, allowing Sugilio to score and end the game.

The win by the Dragons was their first of the year against the first place Lugnuts this season after Lansing had won the first nine games between the two clubs. It was the Dragons fourth "walk-off" win of the year.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mondile pitched well against the league's top hitting team. He went six innings, allowing just one run, a first inning homer by Lansing's Cullen Large. Mondile gave up seven hits but he walked no one and struck out three.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Hendrik Clementina was 3 for 3 with a double, two singles, and a walk. Sugilio was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in.

In the Standings: The Dragons are 28-26 on the year. With the win, they moved ahead of West Michigan into third place, seven games behind both Lansing and Bowling Green, who are in a virtual tie at the top of the Midwest League East Division.

Up Next: The Dragons and Lugnuts will close out the three-game series at Fifth Third Field on Sunday at 2:07 p.m. Hunter Greene (0-3, 7.18) will start for Dayton against Lansing's (0-1, 1.80).
