South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: After being held scoreless for six straight innings on Saturday night against left hander Kirk McCarty, the South Bend Cubs bats came alive late with two home runs hit by Miguel Amaya and Jared Young. South Bend ultimately shutout the Lake County Captains 3-0 for their 25th win of the season.
The Cubs could not provide any run support for starter Jesus Camargo. The 22-year-old right hander had his best start with South Bend on Saturday by tossing six scoreless innings and striking out five.
Camargo took a no-decision and was backed up by the bullpen. Brendan King ultimately earned the win after two innings and just one hit allowed combined with four strikeouts. Brian Glowicki picked up his ninth save of 2018 with a perfect 9th inning to close it out.
Both starting pitchers exchanged back-and-forth scoreless frames, but the Cubs had the last laugh. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Amaya launched his eighth home run of the season into the seats in left center field. The 19-year-old catcher has now driven in 28 RBI this season to lead South Bend.
In search of a few insurance runs, Manager Jimmy Gonzalez played some late strategy and decided to pinch-hit Jared Young in place of Chris Singleton in the ninth spot in the lineup. Against reliever Dace Kime, Gonzalez's strategy played well as Young blasted a long drive towards right field. His fifth homer of the season made it 3-0 as Brandon Hughes reached third prior to the at-bat.
With the victory, the Cubs force the rubber match tomorrow afternoon against the Captains. After dropping game one 5-3, South Bend will look for their third straight series win with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Right hander Javier Assad will take the mound for the Cubs in Sunday's game.
