Dayton Dragons News Release
Burlington, IA - Heading into the second game of a four game series at Community Field in Burlington, Dayton was 55-8 when out hitting the opposition and for the second consecutive game, the Dayton Dragons out hit the Burlington Bees. Those numbers can sometimes be deceiving, as the Dragons also left over twice as many runners on base and committed the games only two errors, the second of which led to a pair of unearned runs that proved to be the game winner in Burlington's 3-2 victory over the Dragons.
Dayton jumped out in front for the second consecutive game plating a pair of first inning runs off Bees starter Blake Wood (WP, 1-1) Sunday afternoon. Keltavious Jones led off the game with a single to right and came home to score on a one out double to right center by Logan Parker.
The first of two walks in the inning by Wood allowed Jason Louwsma to reach following Parker's hit and gave Drew Stubbs two on with one down. Stubbs came through with an RBI single to center scoring Parker for a 2-0 lead.
Anthony Gressick (LP, 4-7) returned to the Dragons after a short stint in Sarasota at High A and made his first start for the Dragons since July 17 th at Peoria. The right hander made the 2-0 advantage standup allowing a first and a third inning walk. Along with an error by second baseman Billy Rojo, those were the only Burlington base runners through the first three innings. The Bees got on the board in the fourth on a lead off single by Joe Dickerson a pair of Gressick wild pitches and an RBI ground out by Jeff Howell.
Burlington took a 3-2 lead off Gressick and the Dragons with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. With one down, Jesus Soto reached on an infield single and started the Bees rally. Derrick Robinson followed with a hit and run single to left, moving Soto up to third. Gressick walked Jeff Bianchi to load the bases with one down. Dickerson hit a two hopper to Gressick and the pitcher appeared ready to start the one, two, three inning ending double play but his throw sailed over the head of catcher Eddy Rodriguez and scored Soto from third and Robinson from second base giving the Bees a lead they would not lose.
The Dragons out hit Burlington 10-3 on the afternoon but stranded 11 runners as the Bees pitching staff bent but did not break. After Wood's departure following his 5.0 inning outing, Henry Barrera tossed 2.0 innings of shut out baseball, Aaron Hartsock added 1.2 innings and Chris Hayes (SV, 11) recorded the final out of the afternoon in the top of the ninth as the Dragons put runners at first and second base with two down.
The Dragons and Bees continue the four game series Monday night from Community Field with an 8:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 7:30 PM. All Dragons games in 2007 are also streamed live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com via All In Broadcasting. LHP Jamie Arneson (1-2, 3.63 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Dragons, while Bees will throw RHP Ed Cegarra (1-4, 4.37 ERA).
