Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI -- The Midwest League's best defensive team committed a costly error in the bottom of the tenth inning and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers topped the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-4 Sunday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. A throwing error by pitcher Casey Fein on a sacrifice bunt allowed the winning run to score.
Wisconsin (42-74 overall, 20-28 second half) jumped in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Calvin Beamon started the inning with a single and Ron Garth followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Alex Liddi got Beamon home with an infield grounder. A two-out infield single by Gavin Dickey drove in Garth for a 2-0 lead.
West Michigan (70-49, 32-17) came back with a run in the top of the second. Brandon Timm's two-out RBI single made the score 2-1.
The Rattlers got that run back in the bottom of the second. Jamie McOwen singled to start the inning and went around to third on a pair of infield grounders. Beamon got McOwen home with a double to right.
Joe White extended his hitting streak to eleven innings with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Rattlers up 4-1.
West Michigan got to within a run in the top of the seventh. Ryan Strieby started the inning with a double. One out later, Santo De Leon singled in Strieby. Jordan Newton reached on an error and that was all for Orta. Mike Wagner relieved and got the first out. But, Scott Sizemore singled to center to drive in Newton and the Rattler lead was cut to one run. Wagner struck out James Skelton, the leading hitter in the Midwest League, to end the Whitecap seventh.
Wagner got the first out of the eighth and Joe Kantakevich got the final two outs. Steve Richard came on for the ninth. But, he could not hold off the Whitecaps.
Timm was the lead off batter for West Michigan and he lifted a high fly ball to left-center. But, Dickey overran the ball and it dropped in about ten feet to his left. Timm raced for third with a triple. De Leon followed with a double and the game was tied 4-4.
Garth started the Rattler half of the tenth with a double. Liddi was asked to bunt over the winning run. After fouling off the first pitch, Liddi bunted the ball hard down the third base line. Fein fielded the ball and thought he had a play on Garth at third. But, the throw was into left field and Garth scooted home with the winning run. The error was just the 112th committed by the Whitecaps in 119 games this season.
Game three of the series is Monday night. Nolan Gallagher (0-1, 4.97) will get the starting nod for the Rattlers. Charles Furbush (2-0, 0.87) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Whitecaps. Game time is 7:05pm.
