Herndon Gets 10th Win as Kernels Beat Loons

August 12, 2007 - Kernels starting pitcher David Herndon (10-8) became the first Kernels pitcher with ten wins this season as he held the Great Lakes Loons to two runs on five hits and struck out three over five innings and the Kernels held off a Loons rally in the top of the ninth for an 8-4 win in front of 2,923 fans on a hot Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon. Wil Ortiz was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI; Peter Bourjos was 3 for 5 with a triple and RBI; Tyler Johnson was 2 for 4 with two triples and two RBI; and Stantrel Smith was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Felipe Arrendondo pitched two innings of relief, allowing a hit and striking out four before giving way to Blake Holler in the eighth. Holler gave up a hit in the eighth, but ran into some trouble in the ninth as he faced four Great Lakes batters with an out, giving up two runs to cut the lead to 8-4.

With runners on first and third and no outs, Warner Madrigal came on to quell the Loons rally as he struck out the first two batters he faced and got the third to ground out to second to end the game and give him save number 14.

Great Lakes starter Paul Coleman (2-3) allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out three over 5.1 innings to take the loss.

The Kernels improve to 25-24 in the second half and 63-55 overall. Game three between the Kernels and Loons is Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7 pm. Gates open at 6 o'clock for Mix 96.5 FM/WMT AM 600 Belly Buster Monday - fans can enjoy all you can eat hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and popcorn for just $7, plus the cost of admission.
