Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Daryl Jones went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning on Sunday afternoon, leading the Swing to a dramatic 5-2 walkoff win on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday at John O'Donnell Stadium.
Quad Cities (30-18, 68-49) continued to roll with their sixth win in their last seven games, improving to 14-5 since July 24. Fort Wayne (17-31, 48-69) took on early lead on Sam Carter's two-run homer in the second, but that was all the offense the Swing would allow.
With a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 10th, Christian Lopez reached base on an error and was bunted to third. An intentional walk put two men aboard, setting the stage for Jones to belt his fourth homer of the year on a 1-0 pitch to right. The three-run bomb was the first walkoff homer of the year for the Swing, who poured out of the dugout to celebrate their 5-2 win at home plate.
The longball capped the first four-hit game of the year for Jones, who had already tied the game with an RBI-single in the fifth. The athletic 20-year-old outfielder has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, batting .436 (17-39) with eight runs and eight RBI since August 3.
Quad Cities needed the late comeback after falling behind early on, but a strong effort from the pitching staff held the Wizards in check while the offense rallied.
Starter Elvis Hernandez did not figure into the decision, but the 22-year-old right-hander did strikeout seven while allowing just two hits over five innings of work. One of those two hits was Carter's two-run homer in the second, so the score was tied at 2-2 when Hernandez exited the contest.
Mike Schellinger added 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, working around three leadoff baserunners and four walks to preserve the tie score. Kyle Sadlowski (3-3) came in next and picked up the win out of the bullpen, striking out a pair without allowing a baserunner in 2.1 innings.
The loss went to Wizards' reliever Derek McDaid (7-3), who served up the game-winning homer in the bottom of the 10th.
Carter gave Fort Wayne an early lead in the top of the second. After Justin Baum was hit by a pitch with one away, the Wizards' outfielder blasted a 2-1 moonshot to left that caromed off the scoreboard for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Steven Hill and the Swing cut the deficit in half. The 22-year-old slugger from Houston drove the first pitch of the frame the other way to right, clearing the fence for his second home run in as many nights. Hill's ninth homer of the year extended his hitting streak to 10 games and brought the Swing to within 2-1.
Three innings later, Quad Cities tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Oliver Marmol got the rally started with a leadoff double down the third base line and moved to third on a groundout. With the infield in, Jones laced his third hit of the game through the right side, driving home Marmol to even the score at 2-2.
