Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars' four-game winning streak ended Saturday night in a 6-1 loss against the Peoria Chiefs in the opener of a two-game series. A total of 14,492 fans were on hand, setting a new Elfstrom Stadium and Midwest League single-game attendance record.

The Cougars, who now trail the Chiefs by 2.5 games for a playoff spot, scored the game's first run in the third on a one-out solo homer by Todd Johnson off Jeremy Papelbon (6-5).

Meanwhile Cougars starter Jason Fernandez had a one-hit shutout through five innings before giving up a tally in the sixth on Darwin Barney's sacrifice fly, which tied the game, 1-1. Fernandez left after 6 2/3 innings, gave up one run on four hits, walked two and fanned six.

Reliever Nick Walters (3-1), in his first outing since rejoining the club from High-A Stockton, erased a jam in the seventh but gave up five runs -- one earned -- in the eighth that decided the game.

The Cougars (25-21), who still have won 15 of 19 games, try to split the series with the Chiefs (28-20) on Sunday afternoon at 2 CT before the teams head to Peoria for two more. Henry Rodriguez (5-6) will oppose Robert Hernandez (4-8).
