Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Gavin LaValley collected four hits and drove in three runs to lead an 18-hit Dayton attack as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Cubs 7-2 on Thursday night. The win allowed the Dragons to avoid a sweep of the three-game series.
LaValley collected three singles and a double to lead the Dragons. Luis Gonzalez also enjoyed a big night with three hits and three runs batted in. Narciso Crook also had three hits for the Dragons, who stranded a season-high 17 base runners in the win.
The Dragons took an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning and two more in the second. In the first, LaValley doubled off the right field wall to drive in Jimmy Pickens from second base to start the scoring. In the second, Gonzalez delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field to bring in Garrett Boulware and Jonathan Reynoso and make it 3-0.
In the sixth, the Dragons extended their lead to 6-0. Gonzalez's run-scoring double made it 4-0. LaValley added an RBI single, and Avain Rachal chipped in with a run-scoring single.
South Bend responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Dragons added another run in the seventh on LaValley's run-scoring single to close out the scoring.
South Bend made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no one out against Dragons reliever Jeremy Kivel, but Kivel got a strikeout and a game-ending double play grounder as the Dragons held on for the win.
Dragons starting pitcher Wyatt Strahan (8-9) earned the win. He worked six and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Dragons (23-29 in the second half; 62-60 overall) travel to Midland, Michigan to open a three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons (22-29, 60-59) on Friday night at 7:05.
