
Captains Work Overtime for Sweep

(Lansing, MI) -It took extra innings on Thursday night, but the Lake County Captains completed their second straight series sweep in Lansing. The Captains had to rally to take the lead in the fourth inning and then used a two our rally in the top of the tenth to beat the Lansing Lugnuts 7-3.
For the second straight game the Lugnuts would strike first. Ryan McBroom would double to start the bottom of the second inning. Following a single and a strikeout, McBroom would score on a sacrifice fly from Alex Maldonado for a 1-0 lead.
After the Lugnuts added a second run without a hit in the third inning, the Captains would cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth inning. Ordomar Valdez and Steven Patterson both singled to start the inning. With one out Greg Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Taylor Murphy then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Valdez to cut the score to 2-1.
The Captains took their first lead in the top of the sixth. Bobby Bradley and Yonathan Mendoza both singled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Yu-Cheng Chang would move both runners up a base. Valdez would then bring both runners home with a two run single for a 3-2 Captains lead.
Lansing would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. With Michael De La Cruz at second base and two outs on the board, Chris Carlson doubled into the leftfield corner to score De La Cruz from second to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the tenth inning the Captains would take the lead for good. With two outs Grant Fink would walk to extend the inning. Mendoza followed with a bloop single to put runners at first and second. Chang would then walk to load the bases. Valdez would then pick up his third RBI of the game when he drew a bases loaded walk to drive in Fink with the eventual game winning run. A wild pitch would also score Mendoza before Martin Cervenka doubled to drive in Valdez to push the lead out to the final of 7-3.
In the bottom of the tenth inning the Lugnuts would get a runner on base via a walk, but Nick Pasquale would slam the door shut to strand the runner at second and secure the three game sweep of the Lugnuts.
Anderson Polanco took a no decision in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed 2 earned runs on just 2 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 6. Polanco would also throw 4 wild pitches. Caleb Hamrick (2) earned a hold with 2.0 innings of relief. He allowed 1 earned run on 1 hit. Hamrick walked 1 and struck out 2. David Speer (5-5) earned a blown save and the win in 1.1 relief innings. Speer allowed no runs on 1 hit. He walked 1 and struck out 2. Pasquale would then go 1.0 inning to close out the game. He allowed 1 walk and struck out 1.
The Captains will now return home to Classic Park to begin a crucial four game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Whitecaps lead the wild card race by five games over the Captains. Jordan Milbrath will get the start on Friday for the Captains.
The home stand begins on Friday with Superhero Night when the Captains will be wearing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (TNMNT) jerseys which will be auctioned off to benefit Captains Charities. Fans can bid on the jerseys throughout the game and receive them from the player wearing them after the game on the field. West Michigan will be donning Shredder Jerseys as part of the promotion and those jerseys will also be auctioned during the game and on-line at www.CaptainsBaseball.com. Various super heroes will be in attendance for the game to entertain and take photos with fans.
Friday is also a Friday Fireworks Night, presented by CPR Cell Phone Repair. The fireworks will be set to Super Hero-themed music. After the game, the local band Digital Output will be performing. Gates will open at 5 PM and the first pitch will follow at 7 PM.
