Kernels Claim Rubber Game, 2-1

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. "" Cedar Rapids claimed the rubber game with a 2-1 comeback victory over the Kane County Cougars on Thursday. Despite being outhit for the second straight night, the Kernels topped the Cougars for the second consecutive night.

Yorman Landa (2-1) earned the win for Cedar Rapids. Landa hit a batter and struck out two in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Zack Tillery (1) recorded a hold. Tillery yielded two hits and struck out a pair in two scoreless innings of relief. John Curtiss (2) secured the win with the save in the top of the ninth.

Ethan Mildren recorded a no-decision in the start. Mildren yielded one run on three hits and a walk while striking out two in four innings.

Brian Navarreto led the Kernels offense with a two-out RBI and a run. T.J. White extended his personal-best on-base streak to 17 games with a double while Rafael Valera extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the third.

Marty Herum put Kane County (37-15, 73-47) in front of Cedar Rapids, 1-0, with a solo home run to left field to begin the top of the second. The home run for Herum was his team leading sixth of the season.

Cedar Rapids (29-23, 70-52) took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zack Larson started the frame with a one-out double down the left field line. Two batters later, Navarreto evened the game at 1-1 with a two-out RBI single to center, plating Larson from second. Navarreto then advanced to second on the throw home, however, the throw to second base from the Cougars catcher sailed into center field, allowing Navarreto to come around to score.

Wei-Chieh Huang (7-3) suffered the loss for Kane County. Huang allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings.

The Kernels begin a three-game commuter road series v. the Clinton LumberKings on Friday. First pitch in the series opener is at 6:30 p.m. from Ashford University Field. LHP Rnady Rosario (1-4, 4.50) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Lukas Schiraldi (4-11, 5.02) counters for Clinton.

Cedar Rapids returns home for a six-game homestand on Monday, August 24th, v. the Peoria Chiefs. Monday's game is a Mark Down Monday. Get regular hot dogs for just $1.50, plus small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips and Cracker Jacks are each just $1 every Monday home game.
