GENEVA, Ill. - The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) has announced that Kane County Cougars athletic trainer Rafael Freitas has been selected by his peers as the 2015 Midwest League Athletic Trainer of the Year. Freitas now becomes one of eighteen league winners to be considered for Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year, which will be announced and awarded at the Baseball Winter Meetings in December.

Freitas is in his second year with the Arizona Diamondbacks and prior to that, spent two seasons as trainer for the Cincinnati Reds' Dominican Summer League team in 2012-13. He served as head athletic trainer for Team Brazil in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Freitas graduated from Florida International University in 2012 with his master's degree in sports and fitness and from Florida State University in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in athletic training.

Other league award winners with ties to the Cougars include '11 Cougars trainer James Stone, who was named Carolina League Athletic Trainer of the Year, and '13 Cougars trainer Shane Nelson, named Southern League Athletic Trainer of the Year.

The Kane County Cougars, Major League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, are the only Major League affiliated Minor League Baseball team in the Chicagoland area and have been at the forefront in providing the best in affordable, family-friendly fun since 1991. In 2013, the Cougars became the first Class-A team in Minor League Baseball history to reach 10 million fans and the organization is celebrating its 25th silver anniversary season in 2015.
