Draft Stories: Michael McLeod
April 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
Michael McLeod was Mississauga's first round pick in the 2014 OHL draft. After a strong showing at training camp, McLeod was named to the team and was the only rookie to debut in the 2014-15 season opener.
It didn't come as a surprise to many that McLeod was able to make the team out of training camp and spend his entire first season on an OHL roster. When the Steelheads made their selection last spring, they knew they were taking a dynamic and skilled forward.
Throughout Michael's hockey career to this point, he has experienced success. This is due in part to his drive and ambition to succeed. McLeod has his eyes on the prize and knows that to reach it, he must put in the work. A recurring theme surrounding the OHL draft is that no player is impervious to the nerves that uncertainty brings on. "I was pretty nervous going into draft day. I wanted to be picked high and I really wanted to go to Mississauga," said McLeod.
"I was really happy to get picked by Mississauga and to play for my hometown," said McLeod of realizing one of his goals, and we're sure his family was excited as well. "Draft day was pretty quiet until I got picked" stated McLeod, "Just my mom freaking out," Michael added, affectionately.
As we mentioned before, McLeod is a driven player. In recognition of his first-round selection, Michael has already tuned his radar toward his next sought after accomplishment, "I felt happy to be taken first round, but it is a long way from my next goal of going in the first round of the NHL draft. So I have lots of hard work to do this summer."
McLeod is already a beneficiary of hard work paying off, recently receiving an invitation to Switzerland to be part of Team Canada's under-18 World Championship contingent. McLeod's younger brother Ryan is about to experience the OHL draft first hand, but unfortunately Michael will have to lend his support from a distance, "I am in Switzerland for U18's now, so unfortunately I won't be able to spend the day with (Ryan), but I have been messaging my family and Ryan a lot," said McLeod of being with his brother tomorrow for the draft. "He has lived through this twice already (with brothers Michael and Matt), so he knows what to expect."
The 2015 OHL Priority Selection is presented by State Farm on Saturday, April 11th and the Steelheads hold the fourth overall selection. McLeod and the rest of the Steelheads team will surely tune in to see which young talents will be joining the organization, and you can too, by following along on Twitter using #OHLDraft or with the 2015 OHL Priority Selection show at www.ontariohockeyleague.com!
