North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The North Bay Battalion chose defenceman Brady Lyle of the Shattuck-St. Mary's under-16s with the first of 15 picks Saturday in the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

The Battalion chose eight forwards, comprising two centres, three left wingers and three right wingers, five defencemen and two goaltenders in the 15-round Internet process. All but one of the players was born in 1999.

A six-foot, 176-pound resident of North Bay, Lyle produced 17 goals and 31 assists for 48 points with 50 penalty minutes in 55 games at Shattuck-St. Mary's, a private school in Faribault, Minn. A right shot, Lyle turns 16 on June 6.

He's the sixth defencemen the Battalion, which played its first 15 seasons in Brampton before moving to North Bay in 2013, has chosen with a first-round pick and the first since current captain Marcus McIvor in 2010.

Lyle, taken 18th overall, became the first player from the area chosen by a North Bay-based OHL team since centre Tyler Rennette of Powassan went second overall to the Centennials in 1996.

The Battalion didn't have a second-round pick after sending that selection to the Saginaw Spirit as part of a Jan. 4 trade for right winger Nick Moutrey.

In the third round, the Battalion used the 57th overall pick to take left-shot right winger Jacob Ball of the Peterborough Petes minor midgets. Ball, six-foot-three and 181 pounds, scored 19 goals and earned 26 assists for 45 points in 36 games. He turned 16 on Jan. 16.

The club's fourth-round choice, 77th overall, was another Northern Ontario product, left winger Bradley Chenier of the Sudbury Wolves minor midgets, who turned 16 on Jan. 20. The five-foot-11, 171-pound resident of Hanmer, Ont., had 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points in 42 games.

The Troops picked the first 1998-born player of the day when they tabbed left-shot centre Kyle Potts of the Oakville Blades midgets in the fifth round, 97th overall. A six-foot-three, 185-pound Oakville resident, Potts, who turns 17 on May 26, played eight games, contributing one goal and three assists for four points.

In the sixth round, the Battalion exercised the 108th pick, a choice originally belonging to the Hamilton Bulldogs, on goaltender Mathew Woroniuk from the Don Mills Flyers minor midgets. A Toronto native who turns 16 on May 25, the six-foot-three, 205-pound Woroniuk allowed 74 goals in 40 games.

The Troops acquired the pick Oct. 9, 2013, from the Belleville Bulls, since relocated, for defenceman Mark Raycroft. The Battalion sent its own sixth-round choice, to the Peterborough Petes on Jan. 8, 2013, for centre Francis Menard.

The Battalion returned to Shattuck-St. Mary's in the seventh round to pick right-shot defenceman Josh Maniscalco with the 137th choice. Maniscalco, who turned 16 on Feb. 17, had six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in 53 games for the school's prep team. He's a six-foot, 195-pound resident of Perkiomenville, Pa., 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

North Bay, which didn't have a pick in the eighth round, had two ninth-rounders. It used the first, 170th overall, on right-shot blueliner Joseph Franzin of the Whitby Wildcats minor midgets. A Whitby, Ont., resident who turns 16 on Dec. 31, the six-foot, 193-pound Franzin recorded nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 35 games.

He turned 16 on Feb. 13.

With their 11th-round pick, 217th overall, the Troops chose left-shot defenceman Wade Brennan of the Ottawa Senators minor midgets. Brennan, a six-foot, 175-pound resident of Kanata, Ont., turned 16 on March 11. He had 10 points, including four goals, and 77 penalty minutes in 19 games.
