Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - The Brahmas kept their fans hearts beating on Valentine's Day as they won a 12 round shootout for their 11th consecutive victory at home against the Odessa Jackalopes. The 4-3 win gave Texas a four point cushion to lead the Southern Conference.
The night began with an early unassisted goal from rookie Pete Rouleau in their second game in as many nights. Three minutes later forward Brandon Benedict in just his fourth game for Texas tallied his first goal of the season from Scott Sheppard and Jason Deitsch. It just wasn't Odessa goaltender Juha Toivonen's period as he gave up a third goal in the opening period, this time a powerplay goal from Kevin McLeod who crashed the net for the 3-0 lead. The goal was McLeod's third in two nights against the Jackalopes.
Odessa found a hole in the Brahmas penalty kill as Dominic Leveille beat Brett Jaeger in the second period. With six penalties against Texas, the Jackalopes found their way back into the game in the third period, scoring two more powerplay goals for a 3-3 tie. Following a scoreless overtime, the teams headed into the shootout.
The Brahmas had eleven different shooters in the shootout that eventually ran 12 rounds until Deitsch, who was attempting his second shot in the shootout (rule allows players to have second attempt after 10 shooters have shot) and beat Toivonen for the thrilling victory. Jaeger stopped 38 of 41 shots and the Brahmas went 1 for 6 on the powerplay.
The Brahmas will be in action again next Friday, February 20 at the NYTEX Sports Centre as they take on Southeast rival, Laredo Bucks for a 7:05 PM start. Immediately following the game is a game worn jersey auction for the Reliant Energy jerseys the Brahmas will be donning.
