Doumit & Hernandez Lift Tribe to Third Straight Win
April 13, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
RICHMOND, Va. -- Catcher Ryan Doumit and third baseman Jose Hernandez combined to go 6-for-10 with two doubles, a pair of runs and five RBI as Indianapolis rolled to its third consecutive victory -- a 6-2 decision over Richmond -- Friday evening at The Diamond.
Doumit, who was optioned to Indianapolis when reigning National League Batting Champion Freddy Sanchez completed his rehabilitation assignment on April 8, went 3-for-5 with one double, two runs and two RBI.
Hernandez, who recently signed a Minor League deal with the Pirates after spending the past 13 seasons in the Major Leagues, went 3-for-5 with one double and three RBI.
The Indians open a seven-game road trip by improving to 5-2 on the season, while the Braves begin a seven-game homestand by falling to 3-2.
Tribe RHP Bryan Bullington (5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) picked up the win in his first decision of 2007. The outing was just Bullington's second since the 2005 campaign. The former Ball State star and No. 1 overall pick missed all of 2006 after having surgery on his right shoulder.
Indianapolis RHP Franquelis Osoria (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB), RHP Dan Kolb (1.0 IP) and RHP Brian Rogers (1.0 IP, 1 H) combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief after Bullington departed. The Indians lowered their International League-best ERA to 2.10.
The Indianapolis offense collected 13 base knocks for the second straight game. The Indians, who raised their IL-best fielding percentage to .996, also turned a season-best four double plays.
Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with runs in each of the first two innings, but the Tribe stormed back with six unanswered to win the contest by four. Doumit tagged a two-run double to highlight the fifth, while Hernandez smashed a two-run double to spearhead the seventh.
Tribe SS Brian Bixler extended his team-best hitting streak to seven games by going 1-for-3 with two walks.
Braves RHP Rich Scalamandre (1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) was pinned the loss in his first decision of 2007. CF Gregor Blanco and 3B Martin Prado led the Richmond offense with two base knocks apiece.
Hernandez, who was added to the roster on Friday morning, has spent part of 15 seasons in the Major Leagues. The 37-year-old owns a .252 batting average with 168 home runs and 603 RBI in 1,587 big league contests.
Hernandez was a non-roster invitee to Pirates Spring Training in 2007. He opted for free agency on March 30 before deciding to accept a Triple-A assignment with the Tribe earlier this week.
The two teams return to The Diamond on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matinee. LHP Shane Youman is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Buddy Carlyle is expected to get the nod for the Braves.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:40 p.m.
