Ottawa Lynx News Release

OTTAWA - It just got a little healthier to take me out to the ballgame.

All food prepared at Lynx Stadium, home of the Ottawa Lynx, will be cooked in trans-fat-free oil, the Lynx announced at a press conference at Lynx Stadium today.

"We're very proud to offer our fans a healthier menu at the ballpark," said Lynx General Manager Kyle Bostwick. "We're always trying to make the stadium experience more enjoyable and I think this is a big step in that direction."

The move has drawn praise from Jim Watson, Ontario Minister for Health Promotion and MPP for Ottawa West Nepean and from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

"Congratulations to Lynx Stadium for eliminating trans-fats from prepared food at the stadium," said Jim Watson, Ontario's Minister of Health Promotion and MPP for Ottawa West Nepean. "Ontario's battle against obesity is greatly assisted with strong corporate partners and we are seeing that today with Lynx Stadium's landmark decision."

"Canadians consume some of the highest amounts of processed trans fats in the world. Congratulations to the Ottawa Lynx for taking this step in a healthy direction," said Heart and Stroke Foundation CEO Sally Brown in a letter to the Lynx.

Trans fats are found naturally in some animal-based foods, but are also formed when liquid oils are made into semi-solid fats like shortening and hard margarine. Consuming trans fats increases your risk for coronary artery disease and could be linked to several other serious health problems. Canada was the first country in the world to introduce mandatory labelling of trans fat.

This is only one of the healthy initiatives the Lynx have planned for this season.

Health and Wellness Day will feature local masseurs and masseuses, Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure tests and healthy choices on the menu April 29th.

Kids will be active all season, with two Jr. Lynx Clinics on the field with Lynx players June 2nd and August 18th in addition to the Sunday tradition of Kids Run the Bases after every Sunday home game after June 3rd.

Florida Fitness will have information booths set up on the Lynx Stadium concourse at six games this season. Lynx fans can join and get on the road to a healthier life.

The Ottawa Lynx will open the 2007 season, their first season as the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, in Rochester on April 6. The Lynx home opener is scheduled for April 17th against the Charlotte Knights at 6:05 pm. Single-game tickets are on sale at the Lynx Box Office 10 am to 6pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm Saturdays. Ticket information can be found at www.ottawalynx.com or by calling 613 747-LYNX (5969).
