INDIANAPOLIS -- Jose Hernandez, who has played in over 1,500 Major League games, has signed a Minor League contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates and will join the Indianapolis Indians in time for Friday afternoon's game at Richmond.

Hernandez owns a .252 batting average with 168 home runs and 603 RBI in 1,587 big league contests. He has spent part of 15 seasons at the Major League level, including 13 consecutive years from 1994-2006.

The 38-year-old infielder has enjoyed big league time with the Chicago Cubs (1994-99, 2003), Atlanta Braves (1999), Milwaukee Brewers (2000-02), Colorado Rockies (2003), Pirates (2003 & 2006), Los Angeles Dodgers (2004), Cleveland Indians (2005) and Philadelphia Phillies (2006). He saw action in over 100 Major League games during the 1996, '97, '98, 2000, '01 and '02 campaigns.

Hernandez has played in just two Minor League contests since 1994. Both games were during a rehabilitation assignment with the Indianapolis Indians in 2000. His Minor League totals include a .243 BA with 20 long balls and 200 RBI in 650 games.

Hernandez was a non-roster invitee to Pirates Spring Training in 2007. He opted for free agency on March 30 before deciding to accept a Triple-A assignment with the Tribe earlier this week.
