NWL1 Eugene Emeralds

Dominant Pitching Performance Sees Ems Blank Indians

July 31, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release

The Eugene Emeralds (4-4, 20-16) rode a strong collective effort from four pitchers to shut out the Spokane Indians (4-4, 26-20) by a final score of 2-0 in front of 2,542 fans at PK Park.

Twenty-four hours removed from suffering a 9-5 loss to open the four-game series against Spokane, Eugene manager Lance Rymel sent Chicago Cubs 2019 first rounder Ryan Jensen to the mound to make his fourth professional start. The right-hander out of Fresno State once again showed what made him such a high selection, tossing 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings for the second consecutive outing while allowing just one walk and striking out five Indians batters.

In the other side, it didn't take long for the Emeralds to take the game's only lead, needing just four batters to make it a 1-0 game. With Edmond Americaan on second after a single, a stolen base, and a fly ball to right that allowed him to advance, Clemson grad Grayson Byrd delivered a single to center field, scoring Americaan to put the Ems up early.

Two innings later, the Emeralds doubled their advantage thanks in-part to an early-inning miscue from the Indians infield. Luis Diaz led off the inning by sending an easily-playable pop fly high into the Eugene night, but what should have been a routine play resulted in Diaz standing safely on first after none of the Spokane infielders took charge of the play, allowing the pop fly to softly land on the PK Park turf for an infield single. Fernando Kelli made the Indians immediately pay for their mistake as he followed with a double down the left field line in the ensuing at-bat, scoring Diaz all the way from third to make it 2-0.

That run proved to only be insurance as the Emeralds pitching staff was superb all evening long. Jensen, Blake Whitney, Zach Bryant, and Tanner Dalton combined to limit the Indians to just four hits and one walk while striking out eleven batters to secure a 2-0 victory for the Ems.

The Emeralds and Indians face off again at 7:05pm PST on Wednesday afternoon with 2019 5th rounder and former Washington Husky Josh Burgmann slated to start on the mound for Eugene. Wednesday is Princess Night at PK Park as well as Win With Us Wednesday.
