Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Memorial Stadium - Boise, Idaho) - Don't bother asking the Vancouver Canadians if they are tired because their play on Tuesday night clearly showed that between the heat (102) and the current schedule with travel - they are hanging and ripe for the picking. At least that's what it looked like as four Boise pitchers carved their way through the C's offense en route to a 5-1 victory over Vancouver. The loss dropping the Canadians to 3-5 (.375) for the second half, one game back in the universally struggling North Division.
Vancouver's offense looked primed for another big night on the heels of a nine-run, 11-hit slugfest just hours earlier - but after loading the bases with no one out in the top of the 1st inning, the Canadians couldn't get a lone run to cross the plate as both RF Will Robertson and LF McGregory Contreras struck out and Boise starter LHP Alfredo Garcia escaped the frame getting 1B Brett Wright to line out to short.
Outside of a solo home run fron DH Yorman Rodriguez in the top of the 3rd inning - that was it for the Canadians offense as beyond the 2nd inning, Boise pitching faced just three over the minimum. The bottom five in the Vancouver order went a collective 1-for-17 with nine strikeouts as LF MC Gregory Contreras found a lone single snapping an 0-for-21 drought at the plate.
LHP Juan Diaz made his 8th start of the season for the Canadians going 4 1/3 innings against a Hawks team that found nine hits off the lefty including back-to-back doubles from Boise 2B Ezequiel Tovar and 3B Aaron Schunk that produced the game winning run in the bottom of the 5th inning. LF Yorvis Torrealba was a tough out on Tuesday going 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch.
RHP Grant Townsend made his first appearance since July 11 (19 days) and allowed a pair of hits over his two innings but did not allow a run to a Hawks offense that has pounded out 23 hits over the first two games of the series.
The 5-1 loss to Boise drops the Canadians to 3-5 (.375) and luckily doesn't see them lose any ground in the North as all three division foes lost on the night meaning Vancouver heads into Wednesday's game at Boise still just one back of Spokane (4-4).
Notes: 3B Trevor Schwecke went 2-for-4 to bump his average up to .400 (6-for-15) since returning from a modest knee challenge (July 22)... The Canadians final 14 hitters were retired in order...
Vancouver sends RHP Nick Fraze (0-1, 2.95) to the mound on Wednesday looking to snap the C's out of their recent two-game funk and back to .500 for this current road trip which currently stands at 2-3 (.400). Wednesday's game can be heard live on Sportsnet 650.
