Chicago Dogs News Release
Rosemont, Ill. - Three St. Paul errors, and a two-run double from Ryan Wagner in his first game in a Chicago uniform helped the Dogs to a 4-2 victory in the opening game of a three-game set between the Dogs and Saints Friday night at Impact Field.
With two outs and two men on base in the home half of the first inning, a Matt Dean soft roller trickled underneath the glove of St. Paul shortstop J.J. Gould allowing Edwin Arroyo to score from second base. With the inning having been prolonged, Wagner then ripped his first hit as a Dog down the left field line to score Joe Benson and Dean and push Chicago in front 3-0.
The Saints would manufacture a run in the top of the fourth after a lead-off single from Noah Perio Jr. The St. Paul second baseman proceeded to steal second and then came in to score on successive ground outs.
St. Paul cut the deficit to one run on the strength of three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Jayce Boyd led the frame off with a double, but was then gunned down at the plate on a ground ball to third base with one out off the bat of J.J. Gould. With a runner now at first and two outs, the next batter, Kes Carter also doubled, and then a Max Murphy infield single scored Gould.
Chicago would respond immediately in the home half of the fifth, scoring their only earned run of the game off of St. Paul starter Eddie Medina. Three singles and two wild pitches allowed Jonathan Moroney to travel around the bases, and doubled the Dogs lead to 4-2.
Chicago starter Josh Goossen-Brown worked into the sixth inning for the third straight start and earned the win for the second consecutive start. With the victory, the Chicago opening-day starter moves to 2-2 on the year.
Jared Carkuff, Taylor Grover, and Kaohi Downing each worked score frames in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings respectively, with Downing earning his fifth save of the season in six tries.
Medina earned the tough luck loss despite allowing only one earned run over six and two-thirds innings. He also moves to 2-2 on the year.
Chicago now moves to 7-19 on the year with the win, while the loss drops St. Paul to 16-10. The two teams will resume their weekend set with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch Saturday night at Impact Field. Scott Barnes will get the starting nod for the Dogs, while Jake Esch takes the mound for the Saints.
The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
