Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (14-11) lost 3-1 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.
The Canaries (11-15) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jordan Smith singled through the right side leading off and scored from first on a double to centre by Burt Reynolds. Reynolds took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Blake Schmit single to right.
"Dylan Thompson did a really good job of keeping the ball down tonight," said Goldeyes' hitting coach Tom Vaeth. "Thompson was in the zone."
The Goldeyes cut the lead in half in the top of the third. Grant Heyman and Jordan Ebert opened the inning with singles. After Canaries' starter Dylan Thompson recorded a groundball double play, Dave Sappelt beat out an infield single that scored Heyman.
Sioux Falls answered back in the bottom half. Patrick Fiala led off with a triple to centre and scored on a Smith sacrifice fly to left.
Thompson (3-2) earned the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits over seven innings. Thompson walked none and struck out nine.
"We'll try to have some more patient at bats tomorrow," said Vaeth. "We'll try to grind them out a little bit more, and hopefully some things will fall our way."
Nicco Blank followed Thompson with a scoreless eighth. Kyle Schepel worked around a one-out single from Reggie Abercrombie in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.
Kevin McGovern (2-2) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing three earned runs on nine hits over seven and one-third innings. McGovern walked none for a second consecutive start, while striking out seven.
Jack Charleston pitched two-thirds of a scoreless inning in relief of McGovern in the bottom of the eighth.
Smith robbed Sappelt of extra bases during a key moment in the top of the sixth. With Andrew Sohn on first and no outs, Smith ran down Sappelt's long fly ball to centre, making the catch just in front of the wall with his back to the infield.
The series continues Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Edwin Carl (2-1, 5.55) faces right-hander Miles Nordgren (0-0, 2.57). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca Coverage begins with Around the Association at 5:00 p.m.
