The night ended at 1:22 AM early Sunday morning, the latest finish in franchise history at Hadlock Field but in the end, Portland sweeps a doubleheader from the Erie SeaWolves, 4-2 and 7-3 in the first two games played by Portland since Tuesday night due to three straight rainouts.
In game one, Kason Gabbard (7-2) picked up his third straight win, allowing two runs (one earned) over six innings. The lefthander hasn't lost at Hadlock Field since April 19 vs. New Britain when he allowed seven runs.
Erie took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tony Giarratano scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Minges tied the game in Portland's first at-bat, blasting a home run off the Dunkin Donuts Message Center in left-center field. The Sea Dogs scored twice off Virgil Vasquez (3-6) in the fourth inning on back-to-back, two-out singles by Brandon Moss and David Bacani. Portland added a run in the sixth inning on a passed ball by Mike Rabelo.
Edgar Martinez worked a scoreless ninth, fanning Kelly Hunt and Vince Blue to end the game. Martinez has now converted on seven of nine save opportunities and earned his first May 24.
Portland secured their eighth straight win by scoring four times off Chris Homer in the sixth inning to snap a 3-3 tie. Bacani had the game-winning RBI, producing a sacrifice fly for his 18th RBI.
The Sea Dogs scored three more times in the inning, Tyler Minges and Gabe Kapler had RBI doubles.
Mike Bumatay (1-0) walked the bases loaded in the sixth but struck out Juan Francia to end the threat and earn his first win of the season.
Notes...Bacani had the game-winning RBI in both games...Gabe Kapler was 2-for-6 in the doubleheader with both hits (double, triple and 2 RBI ) coming in game two ...Portland is 6-0 against the Southern Division at home and has swept two straight doubleheaders...Tyler Minges has an eight-game hitting streak.
