Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Defenders rallied in the 9th inning against the Akron Aeros, but only accomplished their fourth straight one run loss as the Aeros complete the sweep with a 4-3 victory.

The Defenders scored first again when Clay Timpner who was on base via a lead off double crossed the plate on a Travis Ishikawa sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0. Akron answered in the bottom of the second with three runs on three hits and a couple of errors. With the score 2-1 and two outs in the inning, Akron put a double steal on with runners at the corners. Brian Munhall threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Nate Panther to trot home the Aeros' third run. Three hits in the bottom of the fourth allowed Akron to stretch the lead to 4-1.

After allowing the run to cross in the first inning, Sean Smith was rock solid only allowing a few base runners for the remainder of his outing. The Defenders did mount a rally, but they waited until the 9th inning to do it, still trailiing 4-1. With Jim Ed Warden pitching, Randy Walter reached on a lead off single. After Tyler Von Schell flew out, it was an Aaron Hornostaj walk that brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Brian Munhall. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch to take away the possibility of a double play. Munhall then hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Ivan Ochoa who threw the ball away, allowing Walter and Hornostaj to score while Munhall, the tying run, went to second base with one man out. He would advance no further as Jake Wald and Clay Timpner could not deliver the big two out hit.

The Defenders have lost four in a row all by one run and three to the Akron Aeros who come to Dodd Stadium for three games beginning Tuesday with lefty Aaron Laffey (1-0) taking the hill for the visitors against Connecticut right hander Chris Begg (5-5). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
