Rosemont, Ill. - The Dogs socked three home runs, and scored seven runs off the league's earned run average leader in an 8-3 rout of the Wichita Wingnuts Thursday night at Impact Field.
Chicago chased Wichita starter Travis Banwart, who entered the game with a 2.11 ERA, after just four and one-third innings, and collected 15 hits overall to earn a split in their first ever series with Wichita.
Chicago scored first thanks to a wild pitch from Banwart that plated Kenny Wilson in the bottom of the first. One inning later the Dogs scored three times on a two-out rally. Stephen Perez singled, Rey Gonzalez walked, and then Wilson deposited a three-run homer to left center field to push the Dogs lead to 4-2.
After a Treysen Vavra sacrifice fly made the score 5-2 in the bottom of the third, Joe Benson and Dalton Blaser each clubbed solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth to push the Dogs in front 7-2 and chase Banwart from the game.
Kylin Turnbull pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out five to earn his fourth win of the season. The outing was the second straight quality start for Turnbull.
The Dogs tacked on one final run on an RBI single from Stephen Perez in the bottom of the seventh.
The Chicago bullpen pitched the final three frames scoreless to lock down the win for the Dogs. Chicago relievers logged 13 scoreless innings in the series.
Wilson finished the game 3-4, and six different Dogs collected multiple hits. Rubi Silva went 2-5 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
The win pushes the Dogs season record to 28-42, while the loss drops the Wingnuts to 43-27. Chicago will next open a six-game road trip Friday night in Winnipeg against the Goldeyes.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 6:40 p.m.
