Solter One-Hits T-Bones in Rain Shortened Saints Victory

ST. PAUL, MN - Matt Solter appears to be getting stronger as the games get more important down the stretch for the St. Paul Saints. Coming off his best outing since the beginning of June, Solter shut down the second best offense in the league allowing one hit over 5.2 innings in a rain shortened 4-1 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 8,738. The win improves the Saints to 39-32 and they are now just 1.5 games out of the second playoff spot and 3.0 back in the North Division.

Solter was in command from the beginning as he retired the side in order in the first on two strikeouts.

He pitched around a two-out error in the third, but in the fourth another error led to the lone run Solter gave up. With one out Todd Cunningham reached on an infield single to second. Colin Walsh followed with a walk. Noah Perio Jr. then hit a grounder to the left of second baseman Zach Walsh. He fielded it, spun and threw wild to second allowing Cunningham to score and putting runners at second and third. Solter, however, would get Adrian Nieto to line out to second and struck out Keith Curcio to end the inning.

The Saints answered immediately in the bottom of the inning when Walters led off with a walk. Dante Bichette Jr. singled to center and Nathaniel Maggio sacrificed them over. Justin O'Conner then drilled a three-run homer to left, his 10th of the season, to make it 3-1.

In the fifth the Saints capitalized on a T-Bones error. With one out Burt Reynolds reached on a fielding error by the shortstop Mason Davis. Reynolds stole second and advanced to third on a single by Brady Shoemaker. A groundout by Walters scored Reynolds.

In the sixth Solter walked Cunningham with one out and got Colin Walsh to ground out. Ken Frosch took over and got the final out of the inning. Solter went 5.2 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit while walking two and striking out four.

The teams started the seventh as Nieto doubled to lead off against Frosch. Curcio grounded out moving Nieto to third. As the Saints were ready to make a pitching change the rain came down and the tarp was placed on the field. After an hour and 22-minute rain delay the umpires called the game.

The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saints start RHP Eddie Medina (5-4, 2.69) against T-Bones LHP Jayson Aquino (0-0, 4.36). We celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Helium presented by Discount Tire.
