Canaries Snap Skid with Road Win over SaltDogs

The Sioux Falls Canaries' losing streak is history.
The Birds knocked off the Lincoln SaltDogs 8-6 on Friday at Haymarket Park, snapping an eight-game skid. Sioux Falls scored two runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take control of the game.
The game featured fireworks before a run even scored. SaltDogs manager Bobby Brown was ejected from the game in the second inning arguing a call on a fielder's choice. The SaltDogs went on to score a pair in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Sioux Falls responded in the third, loading the bases with two out. Chris Grayson knocked in an RBI single to cut the lead in half, and Patrick Fiala drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2.
A fourth-inning single from David Bergin plated two more runs, giving the Canaries a 4-2 edge. Christian Ibarra responded for Lincoln with an RBI single of his own, making it 4-3 Birds after four.
The Birds added two more in the fifth on a single by Mitch Glasser, giving the Birds a 6-3 edge.
Sioux Falls starter Jake Esch earned the win, grinding through five innings of three-run ball. He walked four and struck out two.
From there, the bullpens settled things down. SaltDogs reliever Jake Hohensee retired 10 straight Canaries at one point, throwing four innings for his longest outing of the year.
Luis Pollorena came on for Sioux Falls to start the sixth, and didn't allow a run over his first three innings.
The Canaries restarted the scoring in the ninth. Jabari Henry scored Bergin with an RBI double, then scored on a wild pitch later in the frame. That put the birds up 8-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The SaltDogs made things interesting in the last frame. Curt Smith hit a two-run home run, his 13th of the year, to make it 8-5. Two batters later, Brandon Jacobs hit a solo shot. His 14th blast of the season cut the lead to 8-6.
That was all for Pollorena, who allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Birds manager Mike Meyer called on Kyle Schepel, who retired the last two batters of the game to earn the save and lock up the win.
