AirHogs Come up Short vs. Explorers in Opener

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The Texas AirHogs fell to the Sioux City Explorers 6-2 in the series opener Thursday at AirHogs Stadium. The teams continue the four-game set tomorrow at 7:05.

Tyler Matzek (3-7) got the start for Texas and went six innings, allowing four runs (four earned) on eight hits. He struck out four and walked four. Matzek posted three straight scoreless innings to start the game before the X's reached four straight with two outs in the fourth to go up 2-0.

The AirHogs got to Explorers starter Luis Mateo for a run in the bottom of the fourth to draw within 2-1 on an RBI groundout by Stewart Ijames to score Dillon Thomas. After Sioux City extended the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth, Texas again responded with an RBI single by Casio Grider to score Lu Zhenhong.

From there though, the X's ran away, posting a run in the sixth vs. Matzek and two more tallies in the ninth vs. reliever Cody White to win 6-2. The Explorers were led by Daniel Jackson, who finished with three hits, a run scored and one RBI. Mateo picked up the win to move to 9-3 on the year.

Correlle Prime led the AirHogs with two hits. Sioux City outhit Texas 12-6. Lu Yusong and Zheng Chaoqun both posted scoreless innings in relief for the home squad.

The AirHogs (19-50) continue the series vs. the Explorers (53-17) tomorrow at 7:05. RHP Gan Quan (0-6, 4.50 ERA) is expected to start for Texas. RHP Taylor Jordan (9-2, 3.45 ERA) is expected to start for Sioux City. A live broadcast of the game will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
