Dogs' Bats Falter in Finale vs. Sioux City
June 2, 2019 - American Association (AA)
Chicago Dogs News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Austin Wright threw 11 strikeouts over five strong innings, but the Chicago Dogs offense struggled as they fell to the Sioux City Explorers, 4-1, at Impact Field on Sunday.
It was another solid day for the Dogs' pitching staff as they allowed just six hits, but the bats could not solve Sioux City starter Jason Garcia or the Explorers' bullpen.
Victor Roache provided the offense with an RBI single, scoring Kelly Dugan, in the second inning, but it would not be enough to sneak past the Explorers. The Dogs went on to load the bases to start the eighth inning but couldn't muster a run-scoring hit.
The X's got two quick runs in the first with an RBI single by Nate Samson and run-scoring triple by Jose Sermo, but Wright rebounded by not allowing a hit the rest of the way. The flamethrowing-lefty finished with two runs and three hits allowed to go with his 11 strikeouts over five innings. Wright's 11 strikeouts were the second-most by a Dogs pitcher in franchise history, and the most since Luke Westphal struck out 12 on May 24.
Pedro Echemendia took over in the sixth inning, throwing two innings of one-hit ball while giving up an unearned run. Carlos Zambrano worked the eighth inning, surrendering an RBI single to Samson and recording a strikeout. Ben Allison kept the X's at bay with a 1-2-3 ninth, giving the Dogs one last chance to tally some runs.
Matt Pobereyko shut the door in the ninth to help Sioux City avoid the sweep.
The Dogs embark on a seven-game road trip that features four matchups in Gary and three in Kansas City. First pitch against the RailCats is set for 7:10 PM on Monday night.
